It wouldn't need WiFi (802.11n) either. Most if not all home entertainment appliances use IR. I'm thinking Apple would never bring out such a device, it wouldn't be in their interests to make a remote that's just a remote, to me anyway it's obvious if they do this thing, it would also be the 6G iPod, think about it.
